What is a Pre-Wedding shoot?
Posted on July 31, 2021
This is a question I’m asked quite a lot by couples usually when we are talking about their wedding plans and photography packages I offer.

If you’ve decided to read this blog is it because you’re not sure what it is and why you would have it? Either way I’m glad you’re here. Even if you know what one is and just want to see some nice photos!

A pre wedding shoot is a photoshoot with your wedding photographer any time from when you have booked them to a few months before your wedding day. Also known as an engagement shoot. It can be at your wedding venue or alternatively at a local venue nearby to where you’re getting married or where you live. It is a chance for you to meet your photographer before your wedding day and experience their photography style.
They usually last for an hour and you will receive some great couple portraits, personal to you and different from every other pre-wedding photoshoot. Perhaps to use as your save the dates if you book early, or use them at your wedding if you are having photos on display.

Locations I’ve photographed at are usually in Northamptonshire, with the exceptions of ones in Birmingham, Bristol and Peterborough. The Northamptonshire venues include East Carlton Park just outside Corby and Abington Park in Northampton.
It’s something I like to recommend, as since I’ve been offering them free with wedding bookings for 2021 and 2022 I’ve found them really beneficial. From a photographer’s point of view it allows us to find out more about your wedding and engagement, which is always exciting to hear! It gives you time to discuss photos you have in mind for your wedding day as well.

If you are feeling nervous to be in front of the camera all day at your wedding, your pre-wedding photoshoot will help calm those nerves. Your photographer will help you feel comfortable having the camera looking at you. This is something I really enjoy with my photography, helping you to feel relaxed and happy during your photoshoot.
Should you bring your dog to a pre-wedding shoot? Absolutely! Yes I would encourage this and look forward to meeting your dog if you do. There are many places they can go for a photoshoot so if you’re wondering if you can or not. Yes you definitely can!

So now you know what a Pre-Wedding shoot is and how great they are! If you are convinced you need one with your wedding photography package speak to your photographer!
Saying “I Do” Under the Sky: Outdoor Wedding Ceremonies with an Independent Celebrant
Posted on July 27, 2025
Guest Blog written by Kaylie Cullen (Independent Celebrant).
It’s time for something different here on the blog, from another perspective within the wedding industry. From a lovely celebrant that I’ve had the pleasure of working with. Kaylie really paints the picture of what your outdoor ceremony could look and feel like.

Venues in the above images: Crockwell Farm, Kettering Park Hotel and Dovecote Farm
There’s something undeniably magical about the appeal of saying “I do” outdoors. The beauty of nature, the fresh air and the tranquil surroundings all combine to create an unforgettable ceremony setting. This is true whether you’re looking for a grand event or an intimate occasion. As a modern independent celebrant, ceremonies with me are not limited to licensed marriage venues. I’m able to lead wedding celebrations in some of the most breathtaking outdoor spaces: romantic gardens to scenic woodlands and peaceful
country meadows (with landowners permission, of course!).
What makes these outdoor wedding ceremonies even more special?
The opportunity to tell your unique love story in a place that feels as organic and beautiful as your relationship. If the ceremony you’re dreaming of is personal, meaningful, and completely unique, I can help you bring your vision, and your story, to life. With a photographer on hand to capture the unique surroundings, guest interactions and those special moments between you and your partner, you’ll be left with treasured images which memorialise your signature celebration.

Why Choose an Outdoor Wedding Ceremony?
Let Nature Be the Backdrop to Your Story. There are a number of diverse, stunning outdoor locations to consider, especially in and around Northamptonshire where there are lush country estates, rustic barns on
working farms and idyllic riversides too. Whether you’re envisioning a rustic wedding surrounded by rolling hills, a serene lakeside exchange of vows, or a peaceful ceremony under the trees, nature can provide the perfect backdrop. The natural world has its own stories to tell and as we weave your personal love story into the ceremony, the setting you choose will amplify those moments. Not only does an outdoor wedding provide you with unique grid-worthy images, and keepsakes to enjoy with your loved ones, it gives you the freedom to tell your love story in a way that feels natural, just like the surroundings that envelop you.
Freedom and Flexibility to Craft Your Story One of the best things about outdoor ceremonies is the freedom they offer to express your personality, style, and story. The great outdoors provides limitless potential; if you’ve dreamed of exchanging your vows under the stars, in your own festival environment, or considered including a symbolic gesture like planting a tree to represent your growing love then outdoor
ceremonies are certainly something to consider. As your celebrant, I will help you create a story driven ceremony. Together, we’ll bring your journey to life.

A Ceremony that Reflects You and Your Story
I’m passionate about creating ceremonies that are as unique as the love they represent. Every couple has a story – a narrative of how they met, what they’ve been through, and what they hope for. My role is to help you articulate that journey and weave it into a ceremony that will resonate deeply with you and your guests.
Whether your tale is full of playful adventures, quiet moments of connection, or epic milestones, we’ll design a ceremony that reflects who you are, celebrating the journey that led you to this beautiful moment. And because I’m independent of religious or traditional restrictions, you’re free to include elements that are most meaningful to you. When captured on camera, you’ll be able to relive those moments again and share them with those you love, and those you haven’t met yet.
What I Bring to Your Outdoor Wedding Ceremony
A Ceremony Written Just for You
Every ceremony I create begins with your story. It’s a tale of growth, connection and experience. A story of love. Through conversation and reflection, I will learn about your relationship, your values, your adventures, and the little moments that make your love unique. These are the aspects that will weave into the fabric of your ceremony.
Incorporating storytelling into your vows, personal readings, or even rituals like a unity sand ceremony, handfasting, or something created just for you which gives your guests a deeper connection to who you are as a couple. Your ceremony isn’t just a formality. It’s a celebration of your journey and an invitation for your loved ones to share in it.
A Calm, Professional Presence to Tell Your Story
Outdoor ceremonies have the added beauty of natural sounds and scenery. They provide the backdrop for the most amazing photographs, but they also come with a bit of unpredictability. Whether it’s a gust of wind, the sound of birdsong, or even a splash of rain, no matter what nature throws our way, I’ll help you keep your focus on each other and the words that matter most. We’ll make sure your story is heard and felt by all of your guests, whether we’re in a cozy woodland glade or on the expansive lawn of a historic estate. When we live in the United Kingdom, we can’t pretend that the weather is always perfect. Even as I sit to write this article, the sound of heavy rainfall and whistling of wind is outside my window. It’s June. No doubt the sun will begin to peek around the clouds before the day is done. Whilst being hopeful is encouraged, so too is a contingency plan, one where indoor or sheltered areas are available should the weather not be as accommodating as your team of wedding suppliers. Whatever happens, it will all add to the story and enrich the memories of your guests, who will remember a brilliant, signature ceremony.
Inclusivity and Openness – Every Story is Welcome
Every couple’s story is welcome and celebrated. I work with couples from all backgrounds, beliefs, and orientations, creating ceremonies that are as inclusive and diverse as love itself.
Every love story is unique, and whether you’re envisioning a bohemian wedding in the Northamptonshire countryside or a more traditional ceremony with family and friends, I will work with you to ensure your ceremony reflects your personal journey.

Practical Tips for Outdoor Weddings
Planning an outdoor ceremony requires a bit of foresight, but with the right preparation, it can be a flawless and beautiful experience. Here are some tips to help you prepare:
– Have a weather plan: As we know, weather in the UK can be unpredictable, so make sure you have a contingency plan, like a marquee or shelter.
– Consider comfort: Think about seating for your guests, as well as supplies like water, suncream (skin safety matters!) blankets and of course, access to loos!
– Permissions: Check with local authorities if you plan to use a public or natural site and check with the owners of private sites.
– Personal touches: Incorporate elements of your story into the ceremony, whether it’s a family heirloom, a special reading, or a shared ritual. These details help make the ceremony truly bespoke.

Creating Lasting Memories
The goal of any celebration is to create lasting memories, and you can do this in various ways. Documenting the event through photography and videography ensures that the feelings and experiences are captured for posterity, it also means that you get a window to observe the moments you weren’t able to witness yourself.

Celebrating with Heart
Creating memorable and heartfelt celebrations requires thoughtfulness, creativity,
and intention. By focusing on authenticity, connection, and personalisation, not only
will we craft an experience that honours your love but also fosters relationships
amongst your guests. They will all have your ceremony in common.
An outdoor wedding ceremony is an opportunity to say “I do” in a way that’s deeply
connected to both nature and your journey. As your modern independent celebrant, I
will help you craft a ceremony that is more than just words; it’s the telling of your
story. No day in the natural world is ever the same; the fluctuating weather, the rhythm of
the wildlife, the blooming flowers and the ever-changing cloud cover guarantees that
your surroundings will be as unique as the chapters of your love.
Whether you’re getting married in a quiet meadow or beneath the open sky, we’ll
create a ceremony that reflects who you are and the love you share.

2024 Wedding Highlights: Part 2
Posted on February 23, 2025
Welcome to the second part of the weddings I got to photograph in 2o24 in Northamptonshire.
July I stayed fairly local in Riseley, Bedfordshire, at their beautiful church within the village. Dan and Vickie’s wedding day was relaxed as after the church ceremony they had a reception full of family and friends at the village hall. There was a fish and chip van and hog roast, so guests could choose what they’d like on the day. Vickie and her bridesmaids had colourful hair pieces within their hairstyles which were as vibrant as her bouquet! I loved the pop of colour within their wedding details and made sure to include this in their wedding gallery!

I had three weddings in August which was my busiest of the year! The month began with Claire and Matt’s wedding day at the Kettering Park Hotel. We actually met at the Kettering Park Hotel wedding fair in the February, so it was a fairly last minute booking, but always worth enquiring in case your date is available with the supplier you’ve been hoping for.
Claire and Matt had an intimate ceremony with a larger reception later on in the evening.

They had some lovely details which I’ve included an image above for you to see and Claire even provided a thank you bag with snacks and other goodies for myself and a few of her other suppliers which was a nice surprise! Claire and Matt had some sparklers for just the two of them at the end of the night which was a special moment. Their bridesmaids were so sweet, and one cried during the ceremony so ended up standing with the Registrar to take the service!

Another smaller ceremony with a large amount of guests at the reception for Leah and Jordan’s wedding. It was a great day and they were so welcoming! The Mother and bride dance after the first dance was really emotional and the groom also had a dance with his Mother which was as moving.
Terri and Matt married at Barton Hall at the end of August, a beautiful summer’s day with plenty of rain. However you’d never know, with the venue being as versatile as it is, the stunning orangery gives an almost outdoor space to guests without being affected by the weather.
It was a wonderful day, they had a beautiful colour scheme with styling by G & L Elegant Occasions that matched the bridesmaids perfectly. I loved the welcome sign they had

At the start of September I revisited The Barns at Hunsbury Hill. They kindly allowed us to have a post-wedding photoshoot for Freya & Jordan. I had the idea after they were unable to enjoy their wedding reception after illness and having to leave early once the speeches had finished.
It cut our couple photos short, and I like to get a couple of sessions during a wedding day, during or just after the drinks reception and then again later in the evening reception. Usually you get two types of photographs and hopefully get a golden hour opportunity! Freya & Jordan did during this post-wedding session and I’m so pleased they did!
We recreated some of the poses and photographs I took earlier in the year at the wedding and it was so gorgeous to create these romantic shots again just slightly later in the year.
More post-wedding sessions like this please! It means you can relive your wedding day together, rewear your wedding outfits and potentially have that golden hour you may not have had on your wedding day!

A week later I was back at The Barns in Northamptonshire for a shorter coverage wedding day for Sharon & Reg. It was a chilled out wedding day which was lovely!
They wanted to just simply be married and celebrate with their friends and family, not too many details. Their wedding sign was fun and matched their invites.

The last full wedding day I photographed was for Stacey & Chris, the day after Sharon & Reg’s wedding. When they booked their photography they were expecting their son, who was a huge part of their wedding day and it was so lovely to see him again with them! (I had the privilege of photographing him when he was a newborn and also his 1st birthday cake smash).

Stacey had put so much into the styling and design of their wedding day and had been planning and creating it all for about 2 years! She went for a black and white colour scheme, with her bridesmaids in black. The groom wore tails and his groomsmen were in kilts to honour the brides family. They had a bagpiper and live musicians throughout their wedding day which was a fantastic addition to the entertainment.
My final wedding days were in December and shorter coverage, which meant I captured the ceremony, group photographs and candid moments before food.
Carl & Zoe got married at a beautiful church in Geddington, Northamptonshire. It is a lovely village with so much history and one of the Eleanor Crosses. They then travelled to Kettering Park Hotel for their reception in a traditional wedding car by Wedding Wheels of Northampton. Zoe didn’t stop smiling throughout the time I was there which was lovely!

To end 2024 I photographed Kim & Phil’s small, intimate wedding ceremony at Kettering Registry Office just before Christmas.
They had both their parents there to witness the ceremony with more guests arriving later in the evening to celebrate their wedding day with them. Due to the weather we changed the location of the majority of their photographs after the ceremony, so it’s always good to have a backup plan in place in case the weather changes your original idea.

2024 was amazing and a brilliant year for weddings, I loved every minute! Thank you to all the couples that booked their photography with me, it means so much. Also a huge thank you to Janet & Matt for voting for me in the Wedding Photographer category of the TWIA wedding awards, my first nomination and I made it to the finals for East Midlands! What a fantastic end to the year!
2023 Weddings
Posted on December 31, 2023
What another fantastic year for weddings! I’ve had a wonderful time capturing couples’ wedding days locally and further away from home. There were half the amount this year compared with 2022, which meant more time for portrait sessions, so cake smashes, newborn, branding and family photoshoots. I still got to visit some familiar venues, Kettering Park Hotel & Spa, The Granary at Fawsley and Grendon Lakes. Then I was able to visit some new venues which I’ve wanted to photograph at for a while! The Church Northampton and Stanwick Hotel.
Starting the wedding season off for me, it was Mary & Peter’s wedding at the Kettering Park Hotel. We met at one of the wedding fairs there and they wanted to book there and then! It was a lovely day, with Alice in Wonderland as their theme for the wedding. We also took a trip part way through the day to visit the groom’s parents in a care home, which was really moving. When his mother saw the bride in her dress, her face light up. There was so much emotion.

They also had an awesome live band in the evening Miami Vibe playing so many 80’s tunes!
The next two weddings I captured were both at the Stanwick Hotel. The first in May was Nicole & Jake’s special day. Surrounded by loving family and friends with their ceremony in the reflections suite. Their day was classically timeless with flowers by Rockabilly Rose Florist, from Kettering and her dress from Charlotte at Maisie Darling in Lutterworth. I loved the sleeves!

Sarah & Tim married at the church in Higham Ferrers which was such a beautiful church. Hidden behind the shops in the town. It is really stunning – I do love a church building. It was one of the windiest days in July and Sarah lost her veil at one point just after the ceremony as she stepped outside the church. I managed to retrieve it from a bush moments later, running with my cameras swinging at my side! They then had a fantastic reception at The Stanwick Hotel in Northamptonshire. Although it did rain on and off for the rest of the day, they got to enjoy the outdoors and get the large group photo of all their guests.

The bad weather continued throughout July and one of the wettest weddings I photographed so far was at Grendon Lakes, Northamptonshire. This is a lakeside wedding venue with a marque and small indoor space for ceremonies. It didn’t matter, Jodie & Mark still had a fantastic wedding day and proved you can have an amazing time regardless of the weather! They had a live vocalist throughout the wedding breakfast and also karaoke later on in the evening. Such a great party atmosphere on the dance floor. So much to capture!

The weekend after I was back in Northamptonshire. This time at Brampton Heath Golf Club for a short coverage of Tara & Michael’s wedding. It was a lovely day!

Abbey & Alfie also had part of their wedding day at a Northamptonshire golf club, this was Harlestone Park. Their ceremony was at a church in Wellingborough which was stunning! I had a second shooter with me that day, Lindsey Arber, who took the first shot in the images below in the church. It definitely needed two photographers to capture all angles in the church without being obtrusive and discreet. It was such a memorable day. From all the details and personalised touches Abbey had to the moments between Abbey and Alfie and their families.

This wedding was a little special as I met Elizabeth & James at Elizabeth’s sister’s wedding last year. I travelled a little further for their wedding day in Litchfield. Their venue was Coton House Farm. It was gorgeous! An exclusive use barn wedding venue. So picturesque. James and his groomsmen were in classic black tie and we got some amazing group shots later on with his friends and their cigars. Their 4 month old son was a huge part of their day too and was such a happy little boy throughout the day!

This was a busy week in August with two weddings within the space of a couple of days! It meant a lot of preparation beforehand, making sure I had everything I needed ready for both wedding days. I usually prep a few days before each wedding anyway to give enough time for charging, cleaning and prepping my equipment.

Nikky & Jack’s wedding day was another special one for me, but for a different reason. They are both good friends of mine, that I’ve known for years! It was so nice to see some familiar faces at their wedding as well and it was a really local one too. Their wedding ceremony took place at Raunds Town Hall and reception was in a family garden – which was huge! So much space for all their guests.

My second wedding of 2023 at Kettering Park Hotel was for Heidi & Neil. It was a great day and one they had booked with me 2 years before! Their day was relaxed a lot of fun to capture! This was one of the larger weddings I captured this year, with almost 100 day guests.

The Granary at Fawsley in September for Richard & Jenny’s wedding was amazing. It was a relaxed day with so many personalised details. I had to include some of these in the images I’ve shared in this blog. Including Colin and Connie the caterpillar wedding cakes! Of all the weddings I’ve photographed, never have I seen these as the wedding cakes before! Such a unique idea. Last year Gemma & Jack’s wedding was another unique and memorable wedding cake. Also at The Granary. Have a look here!
It’s so great looking back at the year and remembering all these wedding days. It makes me so happy to be able to capture such a memorable day for couples and provide them images they will cherish forever. I also try to be as helpful and friendly as I can to on the day and make booking a photographer as straightforward as possible!
The last two weddings I captured were in October and again fairly local, both in Northampton. Suzy & Scott’s wedding at The Church Northampton was a wonderful day. They were super chilled and really enjoyed their day with lots of family and friends surrounding them. The confetti they had was perfect and looked fantastic in the photos! I really do love a confetti shot.

David & Anna’s wedding was another stunning day in October. It was at a local family church in Northampton and then a reception at The Marriott Northampton. They had some different personalised touches which I hadn’t seen before at a wedding – Pokemon! There were Pokemon on the tables, in the seating plan and the theme song was played in the church on the organ! It definitely brought back some childhood memories. And shows you can have what ever you like at your own wedding, it’s your choice! There may be new trends each year, but it doesn’t mean you need to follow them!

We even got some sunset shots which was very exciting! Anna had mentioned wanting some earlier on, but with the natural light fading fast during the speeches I thought we may have missed it. But we stepped outside and saw the perfect sunset! Which called for a few couple portraits including a classic twirl.
It’s been amazing going back through images from this year, these are only a glimpse of the galleries sent to couples. I have really enjoyed being a part of each wedding day this year and cannot wait for more in 2024!
Happy New Year to you all! Wishing you good health and happiness for the year ahead.
Thanks for reading. More next month!
2022 Weddings Part 2
Posted on August 14, 2023
I wanted to start the second part of this blog with a special wedding, I’ve known Corinne for many years after working with her and when she asked me to capture her wedding with Tom I couldn’t wait! So many traditions, first look with father of the bride and then her bridesmaids, recreating an image from her Grandmother’s wedding day, a serenade from the groom, Mr & Mrs quiz game and bouquet throw.
It was a very wet August wedding, but we had some time where we could make the most of the beautiful grounds of Dodmoor House. An exclusive-use barn wedding venue in Northamptonshire.

Rachel & Harry had their wedding back home in Canada, then wanted a wedding celebration at The Crown, Tur Langton in Market Harborough with family and friends. They even got to include Harry’s treasured car as their wedding car and some alpaca’s as their special guests. The rest of the wedding party had no idea they would be there – with bow ties and everything!!

Sophie & Ryan had their wedding at the picturesque Grendon Lakes, in Northamptonshire. A relaxed wedding setting which over looks the lake. Their ceremony was outdoors and reception too, with their meal in the marquee. We had some beautiful portraits by the water with the boats in the background!
October was my second visit to Kettering Park Hotel for 2022, with 2 more later in the year. Laura & Craig had their wedding reception in the Rockingham Suite. There was lots of laughter as you can see from their photos, a little nervous laughter at first, but more relaxed as the day went on.

Carol & Desmond had a shorter wedding coverage with me, just their ceremony, at the Guildhall, Northampton. They seemed to have a lot of fun together during the ceremony and their couple portraits.

Carlie & Brett were one of the couples that had to move their wedding very last minute due to their original venue shutting down giving them less than a month’s notice. Luckily another venue down the road was available within a couple of weeks of their original date and they were able to move everything across including most of their suppliers!

Hannah & Dean were married at the Talbot Hotel in Oundle. This was a special day with the morning prep being moved last minute to the same room I had my own bridal prep in – it brought back so many happy memories! Hannah’s dress was beautiful, with a pop of pink in the skirt. It was an enchanting celebration at the start of December with their closest friends and family.
Jack & Alex’s Christmas Wedding at the Kettering Park Hotel & Spa was one of my last two weddings at this venue with my last on the 29th December. There was even a sprinkling of snow for Jack and Alex which was perfect! Their little boy played a big part in their day and he even joined them for some of their couple portraits in the garden.

All my couples have been so lovely, welcoming and looked after me throughout their wedding days. I’ve really loved photographing them at their best and happiest, documenting all the emotions a newly wed couple go through.
This has been my busiest year so far being a full time wedding and portrait photographer. I feel like I have gained so much from 2022, both in experience and my skills. I plan to slow things down a little over the next year or so, to make the most of the time with my little girl. They say this time goes so fast and it really does! She has changed so much already and is learning fast. As I write this she is walking and starting to talk which is so exciting! I take so much joy from capturing all these memorable days in people’s lives and these photographs will live on forever. This is the reason I do what I do!
