Guest Blog written by Kaylie Cullen (Independent Celebrant).
It’s time for something different here on the blog, from another perspective within the wedding industry. From a lovely celebrant that I’ve had the pleasure of working with. Kaylie really paints the picture of what your outdoor ceremony could look and feel like.

There’s something undeniably magical about the appeal of saying “I do” outdoors. The beauty of nature, the fresh air and the tranquil surroundings all combine to create an unforgettable ceremony setting. This is true whether you’re looking for a grand event or an intimate occasion. As a modern independent celebrant, ceremonies with me are not limited to licensed marriage venues. I’m able to lead wedding celebrations in some of the most breathtaking outdoor spaces: romantic gardens to scenic woodlands and peaceful
country meadows (with landowners permission, of course!).
What makes these outdoor wedding ceremonies even more special?
The opportunity to tell your unique love story in a place that feels as organic and beautiful as your relationship. If the ceremony you’re dreaming of is personal, meaningful, and completely unique, I can help you bring your vision, and your story, to life. With a photographer on hand to capture the unique surroundings, guest interactions and those special moments between you and your partner, you’ll be left with treasured images which memorialise your signature celebration.

Why Choose an Outdoor Wedding Ceremony?
Let Nature Be the Backdrop to Your Story. There are a number of diverse, stunning outdoor locations to consider, especially in and around Northamptonshire where there are lush country estates, rustic barns on
working farms and idyllic riversides too. Whether you’re envisioning a rustic wedding surrounded by rolling hills, a serene lakeside exchange of vows, or a peaceful ceremony under the trees, nature can provide the perfect backdrop. The natural world has its own stories to tell and as we weave your personal love story into the ceremony, the setting you choose will amplify those moments. Not only does an outdoor wedding provide you with unique grid-worthy images, and keepsakes to enjoy with your loved ones, it gives you the freedom to tell your love story in a way that feels natural, just like the surroundings that envelop you.
Freedom and Flexibility to Craft Your Story One of the best things about outdoor ceremonies is the freedom they offer to express your personality, style, and story. The great outdoors provides limitless potential; if you’ve dreamed of exchanging your vows under the stars, in your own festival environment, or considered including a symbolic gesture like planting a tree to represent your growing love then outdoor
ceremonies are certainly something to consider. As your celebrant, I will help you create a story driven ceremony. Together, we’ll bring your journey to life.

A Ceremony that Reflects You and Your Story
I’m passionate about creating ceremonies that are as unique as the love they represent. Every couple has a story – a narrative of how they met, what they’ve been through, and what they hope for. My role is to help you articulate that journey and weave it into a ceremony that will resonate deeply with you and your guests.
Whether your tale is full of playful adventures, quiet moments of connection, or epic milestones, we’ll design a ceremony that reflects who you are, celebrating the journey that led you to this beautiful moment. And because I’m independent of religious or traditional restrictions, you’re free to include elements that are most meaningful to you. When captured on camera, you’ll be able to relive those moments again and share them with those you love, and those you haven’t met yet.
What I Bring to Your Outdoor Wedding Ceremony
A Ceremony Written Just for You
Every ceremony I create begins with your story. It’s a tale of growth, connection and experience. A story of love. Through conversation and reflection, I will learn about your relationship, your values, your adventures, and the little moments that make your love unique. These are the aspects that will weave into the fabric of your ceremony.
Incorporating storytelling into your vows, personal readings, or even rituals like a unity sand ceremony, handfasting, or something created just for you which gives your guests a deeper connection to who you are as a couple. Your ceremony isn’t just a formality. It’s a celebration of your journey and an invitation for your loved ones to share in it.
A Calm, Professional Presence to Tell Your Story
Outdoor ceremonies have the added beauty of natural sounds and scenery. They provide the backdrop for the most amazing photographs, but they also come with a bit of unpredictability. Whether it’s a gust of wind, the sound of birdsong, or even a splash of rain, no matter what nature throws our way, I’ll help you keep your focus on each other and the words that matter most. We’ll make sure your story is heard and felt by all of your guests, whether we’re in a cozy woodland glade or on the expansive lawn of a historic estate. When we live in the United Kingdom, we can’t pretend that the weather is always perfect. Even as I sit to write this article, the sound of heavy rainfall and whistling of wind is outside my window. It’s June. No doubt the sun will begin to peek around the clouds before the day is done. Whilst being hopeful is encouraged, so too is a contingency plan, one where indoor or sheltered areas are available should the weather not be as accommodating as your team of wedding suppliers. Whatever happens, it will all add to the story and enrich the memories of your guests, who will remember a brilliant, signature ceremony.
Inclusivity and Openness – Every Story is Welcome
Every couple’s story is welcome and celebrated. I work with couples from all backgrounds, beliefs, and orientations, creating ceremonies that are as inclusive and diverse as love itself.
Every love story is unique, and whether you’re envisioning a bohemian wedding in the Northamptonshire countryside or a more traditional ceremony with family and friends, I will work with you to ensure your ceremony reflects your personal journey.

Practical Tips for Outdoor Weddings
Planning an outdoor ceremony requires a bit of foresight, but with the right preparation, it can be a flawless and beautiful experience. Here are some tips to help you prepare:
– Have a weather plan: As we know, weather in the UK can be unpredictable, so make sure you have a contingency plan, like a marquee or shelter.
– Consider comfort: Think about seating for your guests, as well as supplies like water, suncream (skin safety matters!) blankets and of course, access to loos!
– Permissions: Check with local authorities if you plan to use a public or natural site and check with the owners of private sites.
– Personal touches: Incorporate elements of your story into the ceremony, whether it’s a family heirloom, a special reading, or a shared ritual. These details help make the ceremony truly bespoke.

Creating Lasting Memories
The goal of any celebration is to create lasting memories, and you can do this in various ways. Documenting the event through photography and videography ensures that the feelings and experiences are captured for posterity, it also means that you get a window to observe the moments you weren’t able to witness yourself.

Celebrating with Heart
Creating memorable and heartfelt celebrations requires thoughtfulness, creativity,
and intention. By focusing on authenticity, connection, and personalisation, not only
will we craft an experience that honours your love but also fosters relationships
amongst your guests. They will all have your ceremony in common.
An outdoor wedding ceremony is an opportunity to say “I do” in a way that’s deeply
connected to both nature and your journey. As your modern independent celebrant, I
will help you craft a ceremony that is more than just words; it’s the telling of your
story. No day in the natural world is ever the same; the fluctuating weather, the rhythm of
the wildlife, the blooming flowers and the ever-changing cloud cover guarantees that
your surroundings will be as unique as the chapters of your love.
Whether you’re getting married in a quiet meadow or beneath the open sky, we’ll
create a ceremony that reflects who you are and the love you share.

Another brilliant year of weddings! 2024 I got to photograph 15 weddings 3 pre-wedding sessions and 1 post-wedding session. It has been fantastic and I am excited to share all the details and all the photos! You can see where these weddings took place, colour schemes, personalised details, the florals and the trends couples chose to include or leave in 2023! All in Northamptonshire, showing the versatility and choice couples have in the area.
The first wedding to capture was in January, which was a lovely winter wedding at The Woodlands. A rustic venue with the option of marrying indoors or outside in the woods. It is a lovely setting just outside Market Harborough. Dom and Shannon had a beautiful wedding with some lovely details during the ceremony and reception. The glow sticks came out later in the evening which the guests enjoyed using!
Next I photographed a lovely intimate, wedding at the stunning Kelmarsh Hall. Janet and Matt chose a Spring wedding in March 2024. They fell in love with Kelmarsh when they were looking for their wedding venue and I can see why! It has such a romantic feel with so much character and history within each room. Their ceremony took place in the saloon, which even includes a baby grand piano!
The food was delicious and presented beautifully by Portfolio Events. Enjoy looking through some photos from their special day:

There is a wedding planning event taking place at the end of this month at Kelmarsh Hall. The Let’s Get You Wed – Wedding Planning Podcast live recording on the 29th January, tickets are available here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/lets-get-you-wed-live-wedding-planning-podcast-show-tickets-1041845918187 if you’re interested in seeing the venue in person and would like some wedding planning tips too!
April was the start of the busy wedding season with two weddings . The first at The Barns at Hunsbury Hill for Freya and Jordan and the second at Kettering Park Hotel for Abby and Ashley. With Freya and Jordan’s rustic wedding at the Barns in Northampton, they had a lovely ceremony with beautiful decor and music by the groom’s brother. It was a fantastic day.

Abby and Ashley had lots of personal touches for their wedding, including their wedding sign and table numbers, each with a different photo of them together. They both wanted a relaxed, fun day surrounded by their family and friends. It’s exactly what they had dreamed of!
“These are absolutely incredible. We are beyond grateful for all the time and effort that has gone into producing such beautiful photos. A forever reminder of our incredible day.” Abby & Ashley.

In May I captured Izzie & Matt’s incredible wedding at Dodmoor House in Dodford. It’s a favourite of mine, with stunning grounds and a beautiful barn for morning prep, the all important ceremony and reception! There is a space for outdoor ceremonies, though both times I’ve visited the ceremony has been inside the barn. Izzie & Matt opted for an afternoon Tea style wedding breakfast which was amazing. I’ve never seen it at a wedding before and it was really lovely to photograph the details. The chinaware looked amazing alongside the place names Izzie had made herself! They then had a Photo Booth, and their DJ was Smooth Moves Events who kept the dance floor full of guests!

Next up Sean and Chloe married in Corby, Northamptonshire. They had their ceremony at St Columba’s Church which was their local parish. Then their dog joined in after the ceremony for the group photos, so lovely when they can be a part of a couple’s special day too!

They also had a caricaturist Vix Caricatures who I’ve seen at a wedding before, she was brilliant. A great addition to the evening, with so many laughs and couples being sketched!

The first celebrant – led service of the year was for Hayley and Harry at the Dovecote Buttery in Newton. It was lovely, and Brenda was fantastic, the ceremony was so personalised to Hayley and Harry and there were so many laughs, smiles and tears throughout! They had shorter coverage and wanted photos just before their ceremony, up until their speeches. We then staged a cake cutting before I left to include that image in their gallery. As the cake looked amazing!

Part 2 is on its way! More weddings from July – December 2024 to share next on the blog very soon.

This question never crossed our minds when planning our wedding. The faux flowers available at the time weren’t that realistic or natural looking so we knew we wanted real flowers. We were planning our wedding 5 years ago and so much has changed!
After becoming a wedding supplier I now think it’s so important to find out whether you are wanting real or faux flowers. It helps you choose your florist and gives them an idea of how you want your flowers to be on your wedding day. There are so many florists available, who all specialise in different styles and one will be the perfect fit for your wedding.
I’ve worked with florists supplying both real and faux flowers and sometimes it’s really hard to tell the difference! Dried flowers and pampas grass were very popular last year and continue to be in 2021.

I thought it would be nice to share some florists in Northamptonshire and Buckinghamshire that I would highly recommend. All have produced some beautiful floral arrangements for weddings and shoots that I’ve been a part of.
Bloomfields

I’ve loved photographing all these different style bouquets and the other floral decoration at a wedding. The floral bow tie? I’d never seen this before but I want to see more of these! Traditionally the groom and his groomsmen wear buttonholes with a singular flower and some foliage to match the bride’s and bridal party’s bouquets.
One of my favourite shots to get at a wedding is the closeup of the bouquet, can you tell?

Next on your Wedding Planning list is your photographer! Well that was next on our list after we’d decided on our venue (we chose Rockingham Castle for those who read my last blog post about Northamptonshire venues).
I spoke to a bride the other day about her wedding plans and surprisingly she had booked her wedding band first as she’d had her eye on that particular band for years! So there’s not a right way to plan your wedding, it’s all dependant on what is most important to you as a couple.

The main reason for booking your venue and then photographer as early as possible is that they get booked up fairly quickly. Particularly on the peak Saturdays during Spring and Summer.
I know there are so many questions you can ask your wedding suppliers. To keep it simple, when looking for your photographer, you may want to consider these few points:
Do we like their style?
Are they within budget?
Do they have enough experience?
Style is important as it draws you into a photographer’s images. Although there are a lot of wedding photographers available, they are all different and unique. Not only are you hiring a photographer for the images they can produce, but also you will be spending all day with them! So it’s always a good idea to meet them before your big day, whether that’s over a video call, meet up for a consultation, to arrange timings of your day (if it is possible) and even have a pre-wedding photoshoot. I like to offer both a consultation and pre-wedding shoot as I get to meet my couples before their wedding. That way I get to hear more about their plans, potentially visit their wedding venue and help make them feel as comfortable as possible in front of the camera.

Wedding photographers prices range on average from £500 to £2000, depending on the package you choose. The price incorporates all the prep work before the wedding day (emails, messages, meetings and consultations), the wedding day itself (10+ sometimes!) and then the hours of editing and culling afterwards.
Any packages cheaper than £500 may be from an amateur starting out so be sure to look through portfolios and ask as many questions as you can think of!
The amount of brides and grooms to be I have seen online ask for photographers with little experience or still studying in the hope they will save money on one of the most expensive parts (after venue and food) of their wedding day. Though you are saving money initially, is it worth it? Typically suppliers ask for an initial deposit to secure the date and the rest of the payment a month before the wedding. So there’s usually a lot of time to save for an experienced, good quality photographer with beautiful images that you love and will cherish forever.

It can become overwhelming when looking for suppliers and some may start to look the same as the next. So make a list of your top 5, then revisit these after a week or so and see if your top 5 still looks the same. Or has your favourite changed?
I saw our wedding photographer via a friend’s Facebook post of her own wedding. I looked through a number of other wedding photographers, no idea exactly how many, but narrowed it down to our top three. I couldn’t stop looking through our photographer’s images. Once he confirmed he was available. That was it!
Hope this has made your search for a wedding photographer a little easier.
